Fall Movie Talk
Goodbye summer, hello fall! As the seasons change, so do the types of movies that we watch. The summer is reserved for comic book adaptations like the surprise hit Ant Man starring Paul Rudd, and big fun action flicks like Jurassic World, which unexpectedly made box office history. And during the fall, we get dramatic movies yearning for attention in any way come award season.
In the latter part of summer, a couple of trailers to anticipated movies dropped and had academy award written all over them. First is The Revenant, a vengeance drama set in the 1820s and starring acclaimed actor Leonardo Dicaprio. Its release is on Christmas Day. Am I the only one who’s rooting for this motherfucker to own a golden statuette before he’s dead? If his performance as OCD maniac Howard Hughes in The Aviator couldn’t get him one, then what will?
Second is Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, another promising western with a brilliant cast. I’m sure this one is bound to be bloody and a cinematic ride not to be ignored by The Academy. On Christmas Day it will be released in 70 mm film in select theaters, and then digitally nationwide on Jan. 8, 2016.
Just last week, trailers for Concussion and The Danish Girl hit social media, which to me was a treat considering it was the start of the semester and I needed a pick me up after seeing the long ass line in the bookstore. I love movies, particularly ones based on true events, and these two films certainly have that in common besides the fact that they are seeking Oscar buzz.
Concussion is about the controversial neuropathologist, Bennet Omalu, portrayed by Will Smith, who discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and then turned heads in the NFL. I’m not big on football. In fact, I’m dumb as rocks. My roommate in Iraq tried explaining the ins and outs to me once, but I couldn’t bear it. Oscar season is MY Superbowl. However, I’m all for a touchdown when it comes to the former fresh prince and an accent. I’ll be there Christmas Day.
When it comes to The Danish Girl, this one couldn’t have come at a better time. Ever since Caitlyn Jenner’s introduction to the world, transgender has become a trending topic. Eddie Redmayne (pictured above in character), who recently received an Oscar for his poignant portrayal as disabled Physicist Stephen Hawking, is now taking on the first known transgender Lili Elbe (1882 - 1931). Perhaps Caitlyn will appreciate this one. It hits theaters Nov. 27. So bring tissue.
