Spotlight: Hillary Clinton
The Clinton in the spotlight right now: Hillary Clinton is in the running to be the next President of the United States of America.
As former U.S. Secretary of State, New York State Senator, and former First Lady, Clinton seems to have the experience needed in order to win the upcoming election for 2016. Additionally, her promising knowledge of law and activism add to her accountability as a potential president.
Clinton shows interest in the eradication of corruption in government, starting with the campaigning process.
She seeks to reduce the amount of money that is involved in the election process through a constitutional amendment. The inclusion of this amendment would prevent the corruption that occurs in American politics. Since funding plays a huge role in how the results of any election turn out, Clinton believes that the expulsion of unaccountable money out of politics would help the elections move towards a fairer and more accurate election. However, Clinton herself receives funding from super-PACs “Ready for Hillary” and “Priorities U.S.A”.
Other policy stances include her changed beliefs on same-sex marriages: within the first few days of her election, Clinton announced her beliefs in same-sex marriage equality under the law, which is a change from previous policies she supported.
Her husband, former U.S. president Bill Clinton, backed up a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in which openly gay men and women could not serve in the U.S. military.
Furthermore, Hillary served as First Lady when Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, refusing to acknowledge same-sex marriages under the federal court.
Seemingly, her views have gotten more liberal as the election continued. As a Democratic candidate, it makes sense when hearing about the issues she plans on tackling. These issues include raising wages, reforming immigration laws, and even attaching her name to the Affordable Care Act. Healthcare has always been a crucial interest for Clinton.
As President, Clinton claims to seek to allow people to go across states for cheaper insurance and make prescription drugs less expensive.
She talks about climate change briefly in her campaign, although without expressing much depth. Environmentalists have been waiting for climate change to be a forefront topic in presidential elections.
Hillary’s lack of specificity in her policy regarding the environment will not be in her favor through the eyes of the environmentalists.
With strong candidates at her opposition, it will be interesting to see how Hillary Clinton does in 2016 running for presidency.
